Casandra Mensing
Receptionist & Veterinary Assistant
Reception Team | Veterinary Technician Assistant
Meet Casandra, one of the friendly faces (and voices!) behind God's Dogs Rescue Veterinary Clinic! Although you may not always see her in person, there's a good chance she's working behind the scenes to make sure our clients, patients, and rescue partners are taken care of.
During the week, Casandra supports our reception team remotely from Austin, helping with medical records, emails, online appointment scheduling, client communication, online pharmacy, clinic reviews, and all the little details that keep a busy veterinary clinic running smoothly. On our mobile clinic days, she trades her computer for scrubs and jumps right back into hands-on patient care as a Veterinary Technician Assistant!
And if there's a tiny kitten in need of a bottle somewhere nearby? Well, you can probably guess who's going to find it first! 🍼🐱
A Passion for Rescue Medicine ❤️
Casandra has spent years dedicating her time and talents to animal rescue, including extensive experience working with Austin Pets Alive!
Her work has taken her beyond hands-on animal care. She has traveled to help other rescue organizations develop protocols and improve their care of neonatal kittens, sharing her knowledge of bottle-feeding, specialized care, and helping some of the most vulnerable little patients survive.
She also spent time working alongside mobile veterinary teams providing spay and neuter services for rescue organizations and underserved communities throughout Texas.
As her family grew, Casandra decided to step back from some of the traveling—but her love for rescue medicine never slowed down.
A Thanksgiving Weekend That Changed Everything 🦃
Sometimes the best additions to a team happen completely by accident!
Casandra first crossed paths with Dr. Knowlton and Beth during a Thanksgiving weekend when a mobile spay/neuter clinic in Laredo found itself in a difficult situation. The team's veterinarian had an unexpected family emergency, and the clinic was falling behind.
With GDRVC closed for the holiday weekend, Dr. Knowlton and Beth packed up and headed to Laredo to help.
And that's where they met Casandra! The three immediately clicked, sharing the same passion for rescue medicine, teamwork, and getting things done—even when the circumstances are a little chaotic.
At the time, GDRVC needed extra help managing paperwork, medical records, client emails, scheduling, and follow-up communication. Casandra turned out to be exactly the person we needed! She joined our reception team, working remotely during the week, and eventually became a regular part of our mobile veterinary team on Fridays and occasional Saturdays.
What started as an unexpected Thanksgiving rescue mission turned into a wonderful friendship and an invaluable addition to our clinic family. ❤️
The Woman Behind Our Mobile Clinics 🚐🐾
If you've ever wondered how we manage to care for so many animals during our rescue and mobile clinic days, Casandra is a big part of the answer! Long before the first patient arrives, she's already hard at work.
From coordinating travel plans and hotel accommodations to organizing patient information, Casandra helps make sure our mobile team is ready to hit the ground running.
That often means entering more than 100 patients weekly into our medical records system, carefully documenting names, ages, breeds, colors, sexes, and other important details so our team can work as efficiently as possible on surgery day. It's an enormous amount of preparation that most people never see, but it makes a tremendous difference in how many animals we're able to help.
And once the paperwork is done? Casandra is right there helping with the animals! She has a particularly soft spot for cats and kittens, especially the tiniest, sickest, and most vulnerable ones. If there's a kitten who needs bottle-feeding, specialized care, or someone willing to take a chance on them when the odds seem stacked against them, Casandra is usually the first to volunteer. The more challenging the rescue, the bigger her heart seems to get. 🍼❤️
Meet Casandra's Family
Outside of veterinary medicine, Casandra's most important role is being a mom to her two wonderful children, Archer and Autumn. Between school, family activities, softball tournaments, and supporting Archer's additional needs, life at home keeps her plenty busy! Working remotely allows Casandra to be present for her children while continuing to do work she's passionate about. And even with a full schedule, she still finds room in her heart and home for foster animals—especially kittens who need a little extra help. Apparently, there's always room for one more bottle baby! 😂
Why God's Dogs Rescue Veterinary Clinic?
Casandra's rescue background, positive attitude, and willingness to help wherever she's needed make her a perfect fit for GDRVC. She understands that veterinary medicine isn't just about what happens in the exam room or surgery suite. It's also about the preparation, communication, teamwork, and countless behind-the-scenes details that allow us to provide care to so many animals.
Whether she's answering a worried client's email, organizing a rescue transport, coordinating a mobile clinic, or caring for a fragile newborn kitten, Casandra approaches everything with kindness, patience, and a smile.
And even though she works from Austin during the week, she's never far from the heart of our team.
A Special Note from Dr. Knowlton 💙
Casandra is one of those people who makes you wonder how you ever managed without her! Her kindness, positivity, and genuine love for animals are evident in everything she does. She is always willing to help, always cheerful, and somehow manages to stay organized even when we're preparing for a mobile clinic with 30+ patients!
I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate the hours she spends coordinating our mobile trips, entering patient information, organizing travel arrangements, and keeping our reception and scheduling systems running smoothly from miles away.
And then, after all that work, she shows up on our mobile days with a smile, ready to jump in and help with patient care—or take home the tiniest, sickest kitten she can find! 😂
Casandra has the kindest heart, and her dedication to rescue medicine and the families we serve is truly special.
We're incredibly lucky that one unexpected Thanksgiving weekend brought her into our lives. Our only complaint? We wish she lived close enough to be here with us every day!
